Phase II
During this phase, approximately two hundred to four hundred patients with a specific disease are given the drug to gather safety information and to determine the drug's beneficial effects. These studies are often done simultaneously in many research facilities nationwide, and are typically placebo-controlled. This phase takes two to four years to complete and only twenty percent of drugs that make it to Phase II testing go on to receive final FDA approval.
